Origins and characteristics of jasmine

Jasmine is a flowering shrub native to the Far East. It is part of the oleaceae family and makes up the genus jasminum, which has more than 200 species. In the East, jasmine flower is considered the symbol of love.

Very fragrant, jasmine is particularly used in perfumery, in particular the varieties jasminum grandiflorum, jasminum odoratissimum or even jasminum officinale (the most common).

Jasmine also serves as an ornamental. It is a climbing plant, which can be planted in a garden, near a pergola or used to dress a balcony. Its flowers are often white, pink or yellow for winter jasmine.

Jasmine flowering

Depending on the variety, the flowering period of jasmine differs from one plant to another. For winter jasmine, jasmine flowers from December to April. For summer jasmine, it is from June to September.

Its flowers open at night, provided the temperature is not lower than 17 ° C.

Sowing and planting of jasmine

Jasmine especially appreciates warm places and sheltered from the wind. Alone jasmine nudiflorum supports an exposure to the North, because it is much more rustic.

We can plant it in gardens, create a cascade of jasmine flowers to decorate a balcony or even adopt it as a climbing plant on a pergola. To take advantage of its captivating scent, it is recommended to plant it in a place with passage.

Jasmine prefers fertile, deep, well-drained soil. It can be planted in the fall or spring. The type of planting depends on whether it is planted in the ground or in a pot.

  • Planting in open ground

After having soaked the root ball, it is tilted during planting to guide the stem towards its future support. Then water abundantly after planting, avoiding standing water.

  • Planting in pots

At the bottom of the pot, we just place a layer of clay balls. To avoid yellowing the leaves, avoid overwatering. And in winter, jasmine is brought indoors (greenhouse or veranda) to protect it from the cold and frost.

Cultivation and maintenance of jasmine

Jasmine is a plant that can climb, provided that it is placed near a fence, a pergola or an arbor. Some species can grow in pots, such as winter jasmine (jasminum nudiflorum). Make sure it is in the sun and sheltered from the wind and that the soil is always well drained. Choose a rich and complete soil.

Jasmine flowers require little maintenance. However, you can bring decomposed manure in the spring. When winter comes, remember to protect your jasmine from frost by surrounding it with a winter veil.

Jasmine requires regular but not excessive watering. In summer, the soil should always be moist. In winter, water only once a week. In both cases, the water should not stagnate. Also be careful not to wet the jasmine leaves during watering.

Pruning is usually done in early fall. To benefit from beautiful flowers and keep a balanced habit, you can cut the jasmine by cutting it to a third of its height and removing the dead branches after flowering, when it reaches the age of three or four years.

Jasmine diseases and pests

The enemies of jasmine are above all aphids and mealybugs. It is recommended to treat them as soon as they appear, with products sold in specialized stores. If you prefer natural recipes, here are some tips to overcome them:

  • Scale insects: in winter, opt for a spray of anti-caterpillars based on white oil. At the end of spring, make 2 sprays of a mixture of water, soap, oil and alcohol.
  • Aphids:use a mixture of water and black soap or molten Marseille soap (150g of soap for 1 liter of boiling water). Spray it on the plant when the mixture has cooled.
